MOTS-C is a short 16-amino-acid peptide encoded within the 12S rRNA gene of mitochondrial DNA. It is therefore classed as a mitochondrial-derived peptide, and was first described in the scientific literature in 2015.
It belongs to Cellular Energy & Longevity and is studied in laboratory research for its role in regulating cellular metabolism and communication between the mitochondria and the cell nucleus.
